Estate Planning Starts With a Family Conversation

By Moize Goulamhoussen · · 4 min read

When people think of estate planning they picture wills and legal documents. Those matter, but in my experience the plans that work best begin with something simpler: an honest family conversation.

Clarity for the people you love

Many of the difficulties families face after a loss come from surprises: an executor who did not know they were named, assets no one knew existed, or wishes that were never said out loud.

Talking openly about your intentions, while you can explain them yourself, gives your family clarity and reduces the chance of conflict later.

Coordinating the professionals

A good estate plan usually involves your lawyer, your accountant and your wealth advisor working from the same picture. Coordinating them is a large part of what we do, so nothing falls between the cracks.

Review it as life changes

Marriages, births, a business sale or a move can all change what your plan should say. A review every few years, or after any major event, keeps it aligned with your wishes.
